Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of community-based training that was established on the basis of IADL(Instrumental Activities of Daily Living) on community adaptation and performance skills including motor skills and process skills of children with mild or moderate intellectual disabilities.

Method: For this study, 20 children with mild or moderate intellectual disabilities aged between 10 and 15 who lived in Hwaseong City or were treated between June and August 2011 at rehabilitation center for disabled children located in the city, were divided into two groups of ten according to the degree of disability. Programs of community-based training were selected based on IADL. In order to compare their community adaptation before and after the training intervention, CIS-A was conducted. Moreover, AMPS was carried out to examine the objects¡¯ performance skills. For data analysis, a paired t-test was carried out using SPSS to compare the changes in CIS-A and AMPS indexes before and after the intervention. Moreover, ANCOVA was conducted to compare the changes in the two groups.

Results: CIS-A and AMPS indexes increased in both groups after the community-based training intervention, indicating significant changes. However, there were no significant differences between the groups in the changes in the average indexes CIS-A and AMPS according to the degree of the disability.

Conclusion: The results suggest that community-based training is effective for improving community adaptation and motor and process skills for children with intellectual disabilities, regardless of the degree of disability.
